Rural and remote communities face unique challenges in responding to climate change due to limited infrastructure, access to services and dependence on the environment for livelihood and health and well-being. However, rural and remote communities also possess distinct strengths including deep local knowledge, and strong social networks that can be harnessed for effective climate preparedness.
Research priorities
- Increase the rural and remote environmental health research workforce and contribute to its capacity strengthening
- Support the development of climate responsive health services (health workforce and health service delivery)
- Encourage place-based responses to climate extremes by promoting community-led initiatives and supporting a decentralized approach to decision-making
