John Nelson

Title: Professor

Prof John Nelson holds the Transport for NSW Chair in Public Transport, Institute of Transport and Logistics Studies (ITLS), University of Sydney and is an Honorary Professor in the School of Engineering at the University of Aberdeen, UK. He was previously the Sixth Century Chair of Transport Studies in the School of Engineering at the University of Aberdeen and Director of the Centre for Transport Research. Before moving to Aberdeen, he was Professor of Public Transport Systems in the School of Civil Engineering and Geosciences at Newcastle University, UK. John is particularly interested in the application and evaluation of new technologies to improve transport systems as well as the policy frameworks and regulatory regimes necessary to achieve sustainable mobility. John is an Associate Editor of Research in Transportation Business & Management and an Editorial Board member of several leading journals. Recent books include Understanding Mobility as a Service (MaaS): Past, present and future (with David Hensher et al, Elsevier, 2020), The Routledge Handbook of Public Transport (co-editor with Corinne Mulley & Stephen Ison, Routledge, 2021); and Transportation in a Net Zero World: Transitioning Towards Low Carbon Public Transport (with Kathryn Logan & Astley Hastings, Springer, 2022). He led the editorial team for the highly acclaimed Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society (2025).
